Origin of Yoga

According to Westerners origin of yoga is likely to happen only 5000 years back but if we trace our history then it’s millions of years back. It’s all about belief but Rishikesh is the “Yoga capital of world”. The Matter is not to involve much in this debated topic but it’s a journey to know The “Origin of yoga” to “yoga capital of world” – Rishikesh.

The Word “Yuj” from Sanskrit which means to get unite, to attach, becomes the modern word “Yoga”. The Yoga we know today is just a glimpse of yoga. Yoga capital of world – Rishikesh is home to many saints and sages. Yoga was initially practiced by the ancient sages and seers known as rishis, who sought to achieve spiritual enlightenment through a combination of physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana). Yoga is a bridge between spirituality and moksha. One can attain the moksha only if one is spiritually awakened through meditation which is part of yoga.

Apart from the Yoga capital of world – Rishikesh, we trace the evidence of yoga can be found in the remnants of the Indus-Sarasvati civilization, one of the world’s oldest urban cultures. Archaeologists have discovered stone seals depicting figures in yoga-like postures, suggesting that yoga practices existed even during this early period. These artifacts, dating back to 3000 BCE, indicate the presence of a proto-yoga culture long before the term “yoga” was formally coined.

Yoga’s earliest literary references are found in the Rig Veda, an ancient collection of hymns composed around 1500 BCE. The practices described in the Vedas were primarily focused on the performance of rituals and sacrifices to appease the gods. However, the seeds of yoga philosophy were sown during this period, emphasizing self-discipline, meditation, and spiritual knowledge. Many sages practiced Yoga on the verge of the Ganges at Rishikesh. That could also be a reason that Rishikesh is immersed as the Yoga capital of world.

The Upanishads, which is a collection of texts written somewhere around 800 or 500 BCE, show a drift shift in the evolution of yoga. These texts immerse deeper into nature and the universe, the self, carving philosophical foundations of yoga. It also shows the gist of concepts such as Atman (the individual soul) and Brahman (the universal spirit), which focus on the importance of meditation and most importantly serenity which many found at Rishikesh hence it also one of the causes that Rishikesh became “yoga capital of world”.

According to Bhagavad Gita and many rishis and saints elaborates on various paths of yoga, including Karma Yoga (the yoga of action), Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion), and Jnana Yoga (the yoga of knowledge). These paths offer different approaches to achieving spiritual enlightenment and self-realization.

The classical period of yoga is often associated with the sage Patanjali, who compiled the Yoga Sutras around 400 CE. Patanjali combined different 196 sutras into one Yoga sutra which is the epitome of the systemic approach and practice of yoga. Patanjali’s work laid the foundation for what is now known as Raja Yoga or the “Royal Path,” which emphasizes meditation and ethical living.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras can be classified into four different chapters.

Samadhi Pada: Concentration and meditation
Sadhana Pada: Practice and discipline
Vibhuti Pada: Powers and accomplishments
Kaivalya Pada: Liberation and freedom
These sutras provide a comprehensive guide to the eight limbs of yoga sensory withdrawal (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana), and ultimately, liberation (Samadhi), (Ashtanga Yoga), which include ethical principles (Yamas and Niyamas), physical postures (Asanas), breath control (Pranayama).

During the post-classical period, yoga underwent further transformation with the development of Hatha Yoga and Tantric practices. Hatha Yoga, which focuses on physical postures and breath control, became particularly popular. One can attain pure mind and body by doing Hatha Yoga which is also lectured in Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita in detail.

Tantra, which is another form of yoga, helps in to awaken the Kundalini energy with a different form of asana, meditation, prananyama to get high in spiritual realms. Tantra yoga is actually spiritual energy, many believe it location is at to the base of the spine.

Yoga widened its wings and flew “Yoga capital of the World” – Rishikesh to the whole world from the early 19th century and so on yoga reached beyond India to the Western world. Pioneers such as Swami Vivekananda, who introduced yoga to the West at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, played a crucial role in popularizing yoga globally. His teachings emphasized the universal principles of yoga and its relevance to modern life.

In the mid-20th century, figures like T. Krishnamacharya, B.K.S. Iyengar, and Pattabhi Jois further propagated yoga by developing distinct styles and establishing yoga schools. Iyengar Yoga, known for its precision and alignment, and Ashtanga Yoga, a dynamic and physically demanding practice, gained widespread recognition and following.

Throughout its history, yoga has evolved and diversified, but its essence remains unchanged. Yoga is not merely a physical exercise or as we can find in these days how people polluted it over Instagram or youtube reels and videos but a yoga is science or practice that helps our mind, our body, and our spiritual growth. It is a bridge or a path to get to know our self or self-realization, our inner peace. The only goal of yoga is to attain moksha and get united with the one universal being(creator). By practicing yoga, individuals can transcend the limitations of the physical body and the mind, achieving a state of oneness with the cosmos.
